Day 1: Lake Natron
Lake Natron
Begin your adventure just past Mto wa Mbu as you depart from the asphalted road, venturing along the East African Rift Valley amidst captivating landscapes. En route, pass by traditional Maasai villages and catch sight of the revered Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Maasai people. Soon, the Maasai village of Ngare Sero will emerge, signaling your proximity to the mystical Lake Natron. This unique water body is home to a remarkable array of birdlife, notably hosting around 2.5 million dwarf flamingos who find sanctuary and breeding grounds here. The highly saline waters support diverse microorganisms, lending the lake its distinctive red-brown to purple-violet hues. Explore the surrounding area on a scenic hike to the lake and discover nearby waterfalls, offering a serene oasis for a refreshing swim.
