The Machame route is renowned for its stunning and diverse scenery, offering trekkers a captivating journey to the summit of Kilimanjaro. However, its popularity among climbers has led to increased foot traffic, somewhat diminishing its natural splendor. Nevertheless, this route remains highly rewarding, with its approach from the southwest and descent via the Mweka route granting trekkers breathtaking views of the expansive Shira Plateau.
Along the Machame route, adventurers have the opportunity to embark on an optional scramble up Lava Tower and conquer the challenging ascent of the Great Barranco wall. Additionally, the route allows for a captivating traverse underneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field, providing trekkers with awe-inspiring vistas throughout the journey.
It’s worth noting that certain sections of the Machame route are steeper and physically more demanding than alternative routes like Marangu and Rongai. However, overall, the Machame route is considered to be easier, offering climbers a balanced blend of challenge and accessibility amidst the awe-inspiring beauty of Kilimanjaro’s landscapes.
The journey begins with a scenic drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, approximately 45 minutes away. Upon arrival at the park gate, our adventure kicks off as we embark on a trek through the lush rainforest along a winding trail that ascends a ridge. At lower elevations, the trail may be muddy and slippery, so it's advisable to equip oneself with gaiters and trekking poles. After a few hours of trekking, we reach Machame Camp, where we settle in for the night amidst the enchanting surroundings.
